Everything was fine when I walked out that door.
Then around 3:20 PM, I got the phone call that no one ever wants to get —
“your room is on fire.”
I froze. My heart dropped straight to the floor. I rushed back as fast as I
could, praying it wasn’t true, praying it was just a small mistake. But when I
got there, it was all smoke, water, and ashes. My bathroom was burned black, my
walls were scorched, and everything I owned was ruined. The things that weren’t
burned were soaked, melted, or covered in soot. My clothes. My shoes. My TV. My
air fryer. My dishes. My blankets. My memories. Gone.
All I have left are the clothes on my back and the sandals on my feet — both
still reeking of smoke. It’s a smell that sticks to you, like a reminder that
everything you had is now gone.
I’m still in shock. Reality hasn’t fully hit me yet. I keep thinking I’ll wake
up and walk back into my room, but it’s not there anymore. I asked the hotel
owner if I could get my money back for the days I won’t be staying there, and
he just looked at me and said no — cold, heartless, not even pretending to care
that I’ve lost everything. That broke me a little more.
